The Live Mixtape + South Side Symphony Corduroy Hat

A little while back, me and 20+ young Black musicians came together to record the South Side Symphony Live Mixtape 💿 at Miss Tina Knowles’ WACO Theater Center in North Hollywood over 4 sold out concerts. It was a party!

Why do I call it a ‘Mixtape’?

It’s inspired by the “Mixtape Era” that I came up in, where our favorite artists would take songs that everyone loved, but put their own unique spin on it and make it their own.

The Lil Wayne mixtape run, Dipset, 50, Gucci, DJ Drama… It was an era!

Fast forward to now. Me and South Side Symphony did our own version of a mixtape, but orchestral! We made crazy fusion-orchestra flips tunes by Aaliyah, Ginuwine, and even did “Back That Thang Up” 😂.

There are also a few originals, as well as some collaborations with some dope artists.

It took me a few years to make any South Side Symphony merch at all.

If you’ve ever seen us live, or saw the suits I wear 😅😂, then you know I take fashion very seriously.

So, I didn’t just want to make “standard” merch that every band has.

It had to be cool. It had to be specific.

I was really struggling with it for a while, and that’s when someone was just like: “Just make something that YOU’D wear.”

I’m a big on texture, and I just think the corduroy is such a dope detail.

Why Not Just Stream It?

At time I’m typing this, you would have to play a track 25 times PER DAY for 90 DAYS just for an artist to get the money they might get from one digital album sale. This model is broken, and I’d much rather prefer to go directly to our community and foster genuine connection over algorithms and data.

That said, we do want it to be accessible to everyone, regardless of if they have the funds to support. The project will eventually be on streaming, but those who support us directly will have early access, far before it is available publicly.
